Hello, I want to welcome you to Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week. Compliance and ethics aren't just something we think about during the first week in May, though. All year long, we must focus on the three pillars of our compliance system -- Prevent, Detect, and Respond. That is particularly true when faced with a challenging economic environment like we presently are experiencing.

To effectively prevent compliance violations, we have a comprehensive Compliance Control Framework applicable throughout the company. The purpose of the second pillar of our compliance system is to detect all violations, ensuring that possible misconduct is reported, thoroughly investigated, and brought to light. The third pillar of our compliance system, respond, entails swift response and clear consequences.

Compliance is a mindset that is part of the way we operate every day. Compliance is about more than interacting with customers or negotiating contracts. Simple things like making sure that tools stay in the factory and protecting confidential information are just as important as contract negotiations. We follow the rules – whether in an office or factory or at a customer site. Our integrity and our integrity as a company, is reflected in how we handle situations that may raise compliance or ethical issues. In those situations, ask yourself:

• Is it the right thing for the company?

• Is it consistent with the company's core values and my own?

• Is it legal?

• Is it something for which I am willing to be held accountable?

If you aren't sure about a situation – ask your manager or the compliance organization for advice.

Continuous improvement in the area of compliance is integral to our ongoing success. We must continue to be diligent – at all levels of the organization – in helping to ensure our long-term success by responsibly dealing with customers, partners, suppliers, and colleagues. Compliance is something that will remain a top priority because only  clean business is sustainable business.
